Here are some recommended sightseeing spots in Mishima’s downtown area

Mishima Taisha Shrine - 8 minurtes on foot

With over 1,000 years of history, Mishima Taisha Shrine is the foremost shrine of the Izu region. It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo visited here for a 100-day prayer ritual.

Every year, about 500,000 people come to this symbolic shrine of Mishima—whether for the Mishima Summer Festival (Aug 15–17) or for New Year’s visits (Hatsumōde).

Be sure to also stop by Fukutaro Honpo nearby, where you can enjoy a set of Fukutaro Mochi with tea!

Genbe River – 2 minutes on foot

This clear stream flows through the heart of Mishima, fed by the pure spring water of Mt. Fuji.

  • Seasonal highlights:

    • In May and June, you can see fireflies dancing along the river.

    • In summer, many people cool their feet in the refreshing water.

  • Experiences:

    • Walking across the stepping stones placed in the river is highly recommended.

    • Heading south along the river, you can enjoy a continuous riverside walk that truly lets you feel the charm of Mishima, the “City of Water.”

  • Viewpoint:
    From Nakagō Hot Spring Pond at the end of Genbe River, you can see a stunning view of Mt. Fuji on clear days.

Shirataki Park – 6 minutes on foot

This park is known for its spring water from Mt. Fuji’s underground flow.
You’ll be welcomed by rugged lava rocks (Mishima Lava Flow), which were carried here during Mt. Fuji’s eruptions.

  • Highlights:

    • The combination of waterfalls, streams, and lava rocks creates a unique natural landscape.

    • From Shirataki Park, if you walk along the Sakura River, you will arrive at Mishima Taisha Shrine.

    • It’s a perfect short walking route that combines two of Mishima’s most symbolic spots.

This makes Shirataki Park not only a refreshing green space but also a cultural and historical entry point to exploring Mishima.

Mishima Skywalk – 40 minutes by bus

Japan’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, spanning 400 meters in length. From the bridge, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, and the mountains of Izu.

  • Highlights:

    • Stunning panoramic views from the bridge.

    • Thrilling activities such as a long zipline and Segway tours.

    • Seasonal flowers, cafés, and shops with Mt. Fuji–themed souvenirs.

  • Access:
    You can take the Tokai Bus bound for Skywalk from the bus stop in front of the post office. The ride takes about 40 minutes from downtown Mishima.
